Installing Google Talk on Wine

By Pratik Shivarkar | Labels: , , , ,

There are many problems when it comes to having Google Talk on Linux,
The native client for Google Talk is not available for Linux..
And the alternatives like Pidgin, or Web Gtalk Client does not support VoIP, and most of the users have troubles installing and getting it run on Wine
Here is an easy way to do it.

Install the latest Wine release from WineHQ

If you already have .wine the default prefix, leave it as it is.
Its better we create a separate prefix for Google Talk.

wineprefixcreate --prefix ~/.gtalk

This will create a new prefix of wine in .gtalk directory in your home directory.

Now download and Install winetricks.

wget http://www.kegel.com/wine/winetricks
chmod +x winetricks
sudo mv winetricks /usr/local/bin

Download the gtalk client from Google Talk

env WINEPREFIX=~/.gtalk wine googletalk-setup.exe

Google talk wont run properly, It will need some extra components to work properly.

Install some components to your new wine prefix using the Winetricks.

env WINEPREFIX=~/.gtalk winetricks allfonts riched20 riched30

Now run Gtalk.

env WINEPREFIX=~/.gtalk wine ~/.gtalk/drive_c/Program\ Files/Google/Google\ Talk/googletalk.exe
You will find gui running normally.

You can login and chat, There will be bug with chat themeing, gtalk may crash, to avoid this,
Download uxtheme.dll
and put the file in your ~/.gtalk/drive_c/windows/system32
directory.

The Voice chat is tested With PulseAudio + Alsa.
The know bugs are
You can't recieve the voice call on Linux end,
(So voice chat with gtalk both side on Linux wont work),
Call can be done from Linux client and recived on Windows end.
Gtalk may disconnect and keep relogging when you login.
Video is not Tested
